| Ripon Sailing Club’s Mirror Armada Program got off to a flying start on Saturday – literally - in windy and gusty conditions sending the Mirrors flying across the water.
20 of the total 36 sailors who have joined the program so far were able to make this first of six sessions where head coach Richard Benson and his team of assistants took participants through rigging and sailing their Mirrors. Participants were then paired up according to skill and sent out on the water - with assistant coaches taking those relatively new to Mirrors. Using video feedback Richard ran two sessions on the water where the sailors were videoed as they sailed a set course. You can see the results of their efforts on ‘you-tube’ using “Ripon Mirror Armada 2007” as your search string. The Armada program is designed for sailors at all levels who wish to participate in club based Mirror sailing and racing. Sailors are able to come to all or some of the sessions, depending on their other commitments, where they will be helped to progress their sailing skills to the next level. While not specifically designed for beginners, at Ripon beginners are being accommodated by pairing them up with experienced assistant coaches to get them off the ground in their own Mirror sailing dinghy. The program also includes the development of skilled Mirror sailors into sailing coaches. Ripon is the first club in the North East to be awarded the Armada status with coaching being provided for free in 2007 by the RYA. |
