MIRROR OPEN COACHING SCHEME: GUIDELINES FOR CLUBS

The information on this page is intended to serve as guidelines for Area Traveller Organiseras and club event secretaries/class captains who want to have coaching in connection with their club open meetings. Those wishing to hold coaching events should declare their interest and intentions before 28 February and register the event and apply for a coach as soon as possible thereafter. Area traveller organisers are requested to contact their clubs to initiate these training opportunities as soon as possible.

Coaching prior to area traveller open meetings

This coaching is intended as a series of one-off open coaching days to precede the area traveller series open meetings in order to give sailors, who are not involved in formal training courses, the opportunity to get expert tuition and to build their skills over the series which they can put into practice immediately. Ideally, 6 coaching days should be built into the traveller series calendar in order to deliver a comprehensive coaching syllabus at intermediate or advanced level. A target of 8 boats at £10 a head should be aimed for at each event.

These open coaching events should be co-ordinated by the area traveller series organizer in association with the venue clubs and be registered with the class training co-ordinator. They should appear in both the club and class association events calendars at the start of the season. Later entries could be accommodated given at least six week's notice

Any club hosting a Mirror area traveller event can register the event and apply for a coach to the MCA training co-ordinator here. It would be preferable for the same coach to be used throughout the area series. The recommended coaching syllabus can be seen here

Each club is responsible for collecting the entry fees and paying the coach who will be nominated by the MCA but will be employed by the club. The coaching day is from 10.00 (rigged and ready) to 17.00 (end of de-brief), but evening workshops are optional as an extra. The club is responsible for providing the necessary coaching facilities and the communication between the coach and the club organiser. The coach's fee is £80.00 plus expenses (evening workshops by negotiation). Where the target entry fee income is not realised the MCA may underwrite the coach's costs.

Coaching at and during area traveller open meetings

This coaching is intended to make sailors aware of the racing essentials and to correct faults as they are seen to arise during racing. It provides effective coaching at low cost to those sailors who would not otherwise get any such training. The coach will give advice before during and after racing to all those taking part. RRS40(e) is amended. The coach should video the proceedings to play back at the post race de-briefing.

The intention is that each Mirror traveller series should provide coaching in at least 3 events. This should be arranged by the area traveller series co-ordinator in liaison with the venue clubs. Ideally there should be at least 10 -12 boats to cover the coaching costs, which are met by the club through an inclusive addition (approx £5.00) to the entry fee payable by all competitors. The club is responsible for providing the necessary coaching facilities and the communication between the coach and the club organiser.

Clubs should nominate their open meeting as a "coached open" when they list it in the club programme and the class event calendar so that entrants will know what to expect. The coaching day extends from at least an hour before launching in order to advise on boat set-up and race basics, through on-the-water coaching, to the end of the post-race video de-brief.
Clubs holding a coached open event can register the event and apply for a coach from the Class Association here. The coach is employed and paid for by the club. If possible the same coach should be used for all the coached opens in the series. There is no specific syllabus - it depends on what competitors want and need on the day. The coach's fee is £60.00 plus expenses. Where the target entry fee income is not realised the MCA may underwrite the coach's costs.
