Class Open Training Camps 2007 A minimum of 12 boats is required to run these events (see event webpage links below for details)
It is hoped to arrange several regional weekend camps at clubs around the country for the purpose of giving Mirror sailors the chance to learn the techniques and skills to get more out of their boats and to have the confidence to take part in club and class racing events. If you and your crew can sail at RYA level 2 (a simple windward/leeward and a triangular course) with or without spinnaker and want to improve then these weekends are for you. It is well suited to adults sailing with children; juniors who are crewing together and adults and singlehanders.
What will I learn? Techniques will include: Race preparation, rig set-up, clothing, safety etc. - Starting, start flag sequence, courses, any general questions. - Tacking and gybing methods and techniques. - Going to windward Pinching, Footing, Sail setting, Crew and Helm Position. - Downwind Sailing Sail setting, How deep? Judging lay lines. - Putting it all together, Racing, Mark rounding, Covering, Boat handling and Sail setting - Evening workshop, Rules. Coaches may vary the syllabus according to need. How is it organised? Each camp will have a Head Coach to manage the training assisted (as necessary) by club race coaches and experienced Mirror racing helms/crews. A typical Saturday will commence about 0900 arrival and registration; - 10.00 (rigged and ready) followed by briefing and launching for on water training; - lunch; - more on water training; 17.00 ashore and changed for tea followed by video briefing. - 1800 games and recreation; - 19.00 supper and social followed by evening workshop (approx 1 hour). A typical Sunday will commence at 0900 with basic aerobic and stretching exercises and advice on sailing fitness. 10.00 launch for on water training; - lunch - more on water training and coached racing. - 16.00 tea and video briefing/feedback. Depart by 18.00.
An essential part of the weekend is the team togetherness of the event, hence the Saturday evening rercreation/supper/social and workshop with the coaches and the sailors interacting. The idea is to build the interest, connections and confidence to carry your enhanced abilities back to your clubs to take part in and try to develop fleet racing in the club.

The host club will provide all the facilities and meals which need to be booked and paid for at registration on arrival. If accommodation is required the club contact is requested to assist in providing the information (which might be posted on the club website - see event webpage above).
A target of 12 boats is required to run these events so that a fleet can be mustered and for the different abilities and techniques to be separated into appropriate learning units and the relevant coaches employed. Hence the prior notice of entry.
How can anyone else help? Non-sailing supporters who are attending are requested to volunteer their help as required by the Coach or the Club to assist, as the whole event is run through voluntary support. This help can include the following functions: - Shoreside Assistant/Liaison Link to Head Coach; - Registration Administrator (on arrival - membership/insurance/logbook); - Crew in coach boat (preferably PB2 qualified and suitably dressed); - Safety Officer/Beachmaster (see class policy here)
Parental Responsibility. Parents ae reminded that all sailors under the age of 18 must be accompanied and that the parent needs to be present throughout the event unless the child has been formally placed in the hands of a locum.
