HUDDERSFIELD SAILING CLUB

MIRROR / HERON OPEN - MAY 2003

With a disappointing entry (8 boats) the day soon brightened up for the spectators as a Bowshaw Blow predominated for all 3 races. There were 4 Mirrors and 4 Herons at the start of the first race, the Herons all from HSC and the only Mirror sailing for HSC was Ron Harding's.

A good course for this Class was set by Paul O'Connor, with some strong legs for running and reaching, two tough legs of beating. From the start the wind was a fresh Force 3 gusty to 5 (perhaps 6), which resulted in 3 boats returning early in the first race. The Mirrors were particularly close, Ron Harding was flying (well planing with a lot of spray from the stern!) Eloise and Kayleigh Hanson worked extremely well as a team taking the first race.

The second and third races were very closely contested, both lead Mirrors had their spinnakers up (even in Force 5!). The second race won by Gerry and Luke McGill in 'Woody', a beautifully hand built varnished Mirror which everyone commented on.
The third race was exciting as 'Woody' and 'Double Trouble' fought to the last, both managed some faultless tacks and gybes, some great runs and well thought out close changes to get the best advantage points. Through sheer determination the last two legs 'Woody' drew ahead and took the cup. Congratulations to both Mirrors in mastering the wind - sometimes vicious and unforgiving with the gusts as the rain rolled across Bowshaw.

RESULTS

MIRROR Winner Gerry & Luke McGill
Second Eloise & Kayleigh Hanson
Third Ron Harding
Forth R Baskerville
HERON Winner James & Mic Dyson
Second Roger Stephenson & crew
Third Jim Robinson

I must also mention the other dinghy's sailing who managed very credible times and results, gave some great displays of control in adverse heavy weather and some good capsize drills.

Steve Mitchell (Commodore) presented the cups and plaques with Gerry McGill from Sunderland responding on behalf of the contestants. Due thanks were also given
to the support and galley staff. A good days sailing and spectating enjoyed by all.

Sailing Secretary

Ripon Mirror Open Meeting
Held 6 September 2003 at Ripon Sailing Club

25 boats from10 clubs enjoyed a challenging day's sailing in the penultimate event of the North Eastern Mirror Travellers Series at Ripon on September 6th. Although the wind was sometimes variable, the race officer was able to set some good spinnaker legs and demanding beats. The first race was led to the windward mark by Tim Gatti (Yeadon), followed by youth sailors Tim and Rob Smith (Bassenthwaite). Ripon single hander Alasdair Rattray moved through to the lead by the end of the first lap and steadily increased his lead on the Smiths. Ripon commodore Judith Hart moved up to third after a mid-fleet start, but a failing wind as the leaders finished spread out the chasing group challenging Gatti for fourth place and meant that a number of boats at the back of the fleet were timed out. In Race 2, Gerry and Luke McGill, who had been OCS at the start of the first race, got clear away from the busy line. Mike Chappel (Bassenthwaite) and youngsters Gareth Hughes and Hannah Mitchell (Hollingworth Lake) chased hard, but McGill sailed clear away. Behind, Hughes and Mitchell, who never recovered from being OCS in Race 1, pulled up to second, with the Smith brothers coming through strongly to finish third. Going into Race 3, the score sheet was wide open, with half a dozen boats potentially in contention. There was a better breeze for Race 3, and McGill's enthusiasm again got the better of him for a second premature start. Gatti led the pack with the Smiths, Hughes and Mitchell and Rattray all in contention. Although Gatti held the lead on the water, Tim and Rob Smith won the race on handicap, and took the trophy. First under 16's were David and Jack Moore from Blithfield in eighth.
