HOLLINGWORTH LAKE SAILING CLUB

MIRROR CLASS OPEN MEETING

SATURDAY, 5TH APRIL 2003

Eighteen boats, half of them sailed by helms under 15 years of age, came to the start line for the first race at Hollingworth Lake. A light north easterly wind was expected to improve as the day wore on, and thermals took effect. However, after a few restarts, the wind soon started to play tricks and create ‘holes’. Becky Partridge and Kate Robinson gained the lead but, after much place changing, Tom Crompton and Sam Robinson took control, followed by Anna McKenzie and Nicola Brook. Ben Crompton and Robbie Cowan took third place. Partridge finished fourth after running aground, as the shortened course signal was given.

For the Race Officer, Nick Brook, the wind nightmare was beginning as preparations were made for race two. The leading contenders all set off towards an area of no wind, while, to the surprise of local club members, Robbie Cwik and Rhiannon McKeown found some wind of their own, with David Hughes (sailing single-handed). Cwik went on to secure his lead comfortably, while Tom Crompton managed second, with James Budd and Peter Morrison in third.

Racing was about to be abandoned for the day, when it seemed that a light northerly was becoming stable. Approaching the first mark, it looked as if Budd had the lead from Roy Platford and Inge-Lisa Hansen, but McKenzie found a strong port lift to take a clear lead, held to the finish. Eloise and Kayleigh Hansen took second as the wind filled to give a full length race, from Budd in third. With the last race win, McKenzie won the tie against Tom Crompton for the event, and the next four places were all very close.

Results:

1. Anna McKenzie and Nicola Brook (RWYC/HLSC) 3 points

2. Tom Crompton and Sam Robinson (Budworth SC) 3 points

3. James Budd and Peter Morrison (Leigh and Lowton SC) 6 points

4. Robbie Cwik and Rhiannon McKeown (HLSC) 7 points

5. Eloise and Kayleigh Hansen (Covenham SC) 7 points

6. Ben Crompton and Robbie Cowan (Budworth SC) 7 points

Results from Wigan SC on Sunday 13th April.

In very windy conditions the results were as follows :

1st Becky Partridge and Kate Robinson ( Budworth & West Kirby)
2nd Eloise and Kayleigh Hansen (Covenham)
3rd James Budd & Craig Williamson (Leigh & Lowton, Staunton Harold)
4th Ben Crompton & Sam Robinson ( Budworth & West Kirby)
5th Roy Platford & Inge-lisa Hansen ( Wigan & Covenham)
6th Helen Williamson & Holly Jones (Staunton Harold)
7th Robbie Cwik & Rhiannon McKeown ( Hollingworth Lake SC)

Becky and Kate were OCS in the 1st race but didn't realise it, and the
proceeded to win the race, but Ben and Sam took the points. The wind was
really strong during the 2nd race and the Hansen sisters sped round the
course and were unstoppable. All was to sail for in the 3rd race, with
several boats being on the same points, however Becky and Kate won this to
win the day.
