Mirror National Youth and Junior Championships - keenly contested by 92 sailors
Youth and Juniors from all over the
UK descended on Mountbatten Centre, Plymouth for the last weekend of the holidays.
A cross section of standards entered the event, from those trying hard to gain
a place on the National Squad, past and present Squad sailors, to those who
were just starting on their Mirror careers, plus lots of Zone and Club sailors.
All were made very welcome by Mike Pearson and his team from Plym Y.C.

"We had wind shifts of 360'!"
Sun and light winds on the Saturday with some pretty big wind shifts throughout
the day seemed to set the scene - causing headaches for the OOD and sailors.
This gave some variety of results if sailors banged the wrong corners.
Close racing at the top of the fleets led to many changes of places. Weed on
the dagger board caused Tom Robinson and Shaun Mason to lose their lead in Race
One, Ollie Turner and Charlotte Jones took the lead but sailed for wrong mark
allowing four boats to slip through. Tom Robinson and Shaun Mason worked hard
to get back into the lead. A lead which they held overnight.
Three races sailed allowed the discard to kick in at the end of the day, points
were close causing pressure in a number of camps.
Seven potential winners going
into Last Race!
Sunday saw sun again with steadier winds ranging from 8 knots to 17 knots by
the last race.
Excitement mounted on the start of the last race with seven boats going for
the first overall position. Rosie Chapman and Megan Baker gained a early lead,
with other sailors who hadn't the best of results all weekend chasing hard.
The seven in contention for winning didn't fare so well, but Josh and Joric
Gebhard, who raced pretty consistently, sailed hard and finished second, but
took the lead after Rosie was DSQ. - which gave him a comfortable overall win.
George Yeoman and Charles Crane from Itchenor finished second and are the NEW
Mirror Junior Champions

Please note that the MCA Junior Category is UNDER 15 on the first day of the event. By tradition this event is seen as a Youth fleet and a separate Junior fleet, though in recent years both fleets have sailed together. A boat in the Junior fleet cannot win the Youth trophy.
