Mirror Class Association Championships

Eastern Area Championship and World Qualifier
Brightlingsea Sailing Club 11th and 12th September 2004

With the forecast for the weekend saying gales any sailing looked to be in doubt. Saturday dawned with a force 5-6 leaving the race committee with a difficult decision, in the end they decided to try and get three races in sailing up river.

The first race saw Emma and John Barry from Brightlingsea make a port end start and lead to the windward mark, they were closely followed by Craig and Mitchell bond also from Brightlingsea, with current National Champion Dan and James Ellis from Royal Plymouth Corinthian in 3rd and past Mirror champion Steve and Juliet Long from Plymouth Yacht Club in 4th. The Bond's soon took the lead from the Barry's and went on to win, the Ellis boys had a battle with the Barry's and took second place on the line from the Barry's 3rd and the Long's 4th.

After a short delay the second race got under way, the Ellis boys lead from the start and went on to win by a large margin, behind them the battle for the minor places saw two new boats at the front, the Hansen sisters from Covenham and Tom Robinson from Warsach, after some close racing and with the wind increasing the race officer decided to shorten the race, the Hansen girls secured a 2nd followed by Robinson and the Bonds.

The final race for Saturday was cancelled due to the wind increasing to force 7.

It was very apparent from Sunday morning that to get any sailing in on Sunday would be difficult, the race committee decided at 9:30 that no further sailing would be done, this left the Ellis boys as overall Champions with the Bond's second and the Long's third.

This was a World Qualifier event with ranking points awarded, the last event is at Warsash Sailing Club on the 25th/26th September, and after this date the GBR team will be announced.
