David Conlon and Mitchell Bond lead the class rankings. After four rounds, David and Mitchell hang on to their position at the top of the Allen Brothers Championship Series, being ranked No 1 all year. But things are getting very close going into the last two Championships. After the Inlands at Hollingworth there will be a discard, which is likely to shake things up going into the final round at Shustoke in October

Mirror Scottish Championships. Date 5th and 6th July at Annandale Sailing Club
Report by Paul Hansen

Saturday started with a nice breeze only for the rain to kill the wind by the time the first beat had been completed, racing in the very light and shifty wind proved tricky however Ed and Beth Grey from Windemere made the most of the conditions taking the first race. The conditions did not alter for the rest of the afternoon, and neither did Ed and Beth’s winning ways, although there was close racing for the remaining places and in the third race local boat J Hugo and E Murgatroyed took a well deserved second place.

The rain finally stopped in time for the BBQ on Saturday night which was enjoyed by all.

Sunday was a different day with sunshine and a nice force 3 wind, again Ed and Beth were out in front always finding the lifts, and after the first two races when an excellent lunch was served they had sewn up the championship. At this point John and Clare Peterson (Whitstable) were 2nd on 11 points, with Nicky Haigh and Will Nickson (Windemere) 3rd and Inge-lisa Hansen and Oliver Townsend (N Lincs and Ripon) 4th both tied on 12 points, the last race was crucial to these boats. Again Ed was unstoppable; the other boats changed positions with each beat as the shifts caught them out, eventually Inge-lisa pulled through to second with Nicky third.

These positions were also the final championship positions with the Petersons who had sailed well all weekend losing out at the final hurdle and coming fourth.

J Hugo won the Masters prize.
Bob Towler (Beaver) won the single handed prize.

The catering and hospitality shown by the host club was fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by all competitors and their families.

At the half way stage of the Allen Brothers Natiownide Championship Series, the Brightlingsea Boys still top the leaderboard, Chris Rust and Oliver Newman jumping up to second place. Rankings are very tight, with a mere five points seperating 2nd to 9th places. The next round is Restronguet, which also includes the Youth and Junior Championships.

Beth White to make sea crossing in a Mirror. The end of July will see the former squad sailor make the crossing in "Auk" Mirror dinghy sail number 68302 from St Mary's on the Scillies to Mount's Bay Sailing Club, Marazion, Cornwall. The helm will be Tony Clee. Tony is 82 and has recently recovered from throat cancer. He continues to race regularly at club level and on his day is still capable of winning within a fleet which includes National Squad and Zone Squad sailors. This is a crossing of some 40 miles with some of the most demanding tidal and sea conditions to be found around our coastline. An added hazard is that it is also one of the UK's busiest shipping areas.

Tony conceived this challenge to raise money for Cancer Research in order to "give something back" and to show his gratitude for the care, attention and expertise he received in helping him to combat cancer. His challenge is already receiving considerable media interest and it is being presented as the oldest and youngest crew in the smallest sailing dinghy ever to attempt this crossing.

Barrys win Nationals. The weather again threatened the second part of the Nationals, with winds gusting 30 knots + on the Sunday at Poole, but with four races over a variety of conditions and two venues we now have worthy champions in the Barry sisters from Brightlingsea SC. Again 2005 World Champion Ross Kearney and Katy Jones finished second, with Natalie and Grace Roach completing the podium

Mirrors at Beaver. Matt Grayson writes;

On Saturday we saw the Mirror/Topper open turn out 15 (yes fifteen) Mirrors.
Seven of the Mirrors were from the Beaver Sailing Club, so well done and thank you all for supporting my efforts.

The conditions were testing (light winds) but the competition was keen. Two of the boats had come all the way from Bassenthwaite SC and produced the eventual winner.

This years event was somewhat unusual in that it was a combined Armada/Open where race instructions had been changed to allow on the water coaching during the racing. Coaching was provided by Lilly and Becky from a dory in race one and who split up to help sailors in race two. In race three they climbed into their own boat to show that they could still perform – but as they had not entered the event their result did not count!

Having now completed four of this years six Mirror Armada sessions at Beaver we can see the benefits of understanding the boat and the wind. Certainly all the tweaking of boat settings is now starting to pay off.

The Beaver placings are as follows:-

Mik Chappell 2,1,3. 1st Bassenthwaite
Matt Grayson 4,7,1. 2nd Beaver
Inge-Lisa Hansen/Oliver townsend 1,4,4. 3rd North Lics
Matthew and Benjamin Lulham-Robinson 3,2,15 4th Yeadon/Otley
Peter Sedgewood/ Ewan Byers 14,8,2 5th Ripon
Bob Towler 8,3,7. 6th Beaver
Ed and Reg Grayson 6,11,5. 7th Beaver
Malcolm Elwood 10, 5, 6. 8th Beaver
Paul Julings 5,6,15 9th Beaver
Catherine and William Hide 11,9,8 10th Ripon
Oliver White and Eleanor Hide 9,13,9. 11th Ripon
D. Todhunter 7,15,15 12th Bassenthwaite
Martin Rumsby 13,10,15 13th Beaver
Paul Lundy 12,12, 15. 14th Beaver

So well done everyone who took part, especially Paul Lundy as it was his first competitive race.. Also Ed and Reg who struggled with concentration at times but beat Zone Squad members during the course of the day.

All in all it was a very successful day, with Lilly and Becky giving some informative between race feedback and on water instruction to Armada attendees.

Next Mirror Armada event at Beaver is on 29th June 2008 where the coaches will be looking a the application of racing rules and thinking ahead to avoid getting caught out on the race track.

Nationals continues at PYC . With the weather gods failing to play ball over the bank holiday weekend and only one race completed, we have some unfinished business. So the postponement flag is flying, with the plan that Race 2 will now be on 21st June at Poole YC as part of the already scheduled Mirror Nationwide Championship 3 event. The aim being to complete a seven race series, including Race 1 (already completed). We are revising the NOR which will be issued shortly, in the meantime if you have not already entered for Poole please can you do so ASAP to allow us to finalise planning for what will be a larger fleet.

Emma and Martina Barry Win Race 1. After a shift in wind conditions Day 1 turned into a demolition Derby with big seas to catch much of the fleet out. In the end only half the fleet finished, enjoying some great surfing and sunshine. After leading for much of the first lap Tom and James Lovesey decided to sail twice the distance to the penultimate mark letting most of the fleet through. In the end the Barry sisters made the most of the conditions to win from the Spreckley twins, with the Roach sisters third.

Natalie and Grace Roach win Looe with a Clean Sweep.. An excellent turnout of 11 Mirrors were on the water for an excellent, but demanding, days sailing in the Cornish sunshine. The fleet was dominated by the highly enthusiastic Mirror Fleet at Looe SC which has the potential to be the new hotbed of Mirror sailing in the southwest. Their new Armada Fleet status is paying off with some excellent training supported by the Mirror Class Association. Big seas dominated the morning race while the afternoon became tricky with lighter winds but still with a residual swell. Natalie Roach managed to take time off from her new career in the Royal Navy to lead the ‘Fleet’ around the course with 3 wins and looks to pick up where she left off last year as the top SW Mirror. Jeremy Stevens and his daughter Rebecca from Penzance, once they had dealt with rudder problems when launching in the heavy surf, demonstrated a potential that could bear fruit at next week’s nationals with two seconds, while Rob and Imogen Bellfield were third overall. The stars from Looe were Matt and Daisy Jaycock who showed good speed in the lighter winds in their beautifully refurbished boat to come fourth, closely followed by Tom Richardson and Billy Palfrey in one of the new Lottery-funded club boats. The Mirrors at Looe are a benchmark for other clubs; it is great to see such a strong class spirit within a really friendly club.

Andy Smith wins at Itchenor. Former Fireball World Champion launched his new Winder MK3 in style by sweeping the board at the Itchenor Southern Traveller. Sailing with son Tom, they took all five races. Held at Itchenor on Sunday 27th April in hugely variable conditions with the wind swinging from North east through the compass until settling on SW for the final race of 5. Wind strength moved from calm to force 3 through the day with the odd thunder storm thrown in.

Behind Andrew racing was very tight and second could have been taken by the next four. Alice Courage and Lily Lawton from Poole proved to be most consistent taking second, with Emma Gough (crew) and David (Dad and Helm) third and Evie Clemence and Milly Pugh just one point behind in fourth.

Youth Squad keep warm at Draycote. A brisk run round the lake (5 miles) followed by some energetic sailing exercises, ensured the ten boat MCA Youth Squad kept warm in the freezing conditions experienced over the weekend. The second Youth Squad weekend was led by P+B's Mirror Guru and 2005 World Champion, Ross Kearney, who kept the fleet on their toes and learning a few new trick. It was very impressive to see how close the racing was. The next session will be at Hayling in December, combined with the RYA National Junior Squad, so will be interesting to see who are the front runners are at this stage in winter training. The weekend also saw the champagne launch of Ed and Beth Grey's new MK3 Winder Mirror. This boat drew many admiring looks , particularly its multi colour scheme and many new ideas, some which can be seen in the photos.

Roy Partridge.
It is with great sadness to report that Roy Partridge passed away during the week. Although you may not have known Roy personally, you will almost certainly know his name. Roy has probably won more Mirror championships than any other sailor, including the Worlds, Europeans and Nationals. Roy also wrote the book "Sailing the Mirror", which for many years was considered the class bible and helped many thousands enjoy their Mirror sailing to the fullest. Roy was very active in the formative stages of the MCA, and it was his enthusiasm for racing and extracting the full performance out of the Mirror that helped Mirrors become the competitive racing class we are today. Our thoughts are with Roys family at this sad time.

MIRROR CONDITIONS AT SUTTON BINGHAM.
Natalie and Grace Roach dominated the ‘glass-like’ conditions at Sutton Bingham to win all three races and complete a successful SW Travellers Series to win the series trophy. The resurgence of the Mirror Fleet at Sutton Bingham saw 4 visitors and 5 local boats compete for the RYA Zone Squad selection trials in testing conditions. The coaching from Rosie Chapman the day before paid off for many of the less experienced sailors, with starting skills and boat speed improving dramatically over the weekend – hopefully starting many of them on the path to success, with Joe Palfray / Alex Richardson from Looe and Fred Cleary / Ben Clarke from Sutton Bingham, showing talent that bodes well for the future. Many of the more established SW travellers were regularly at the front of the Fleet with James Brant / Danial Peek and Will Searle /James Wilkinson challenging Natalie, along with Robert Bellfield (in his 38 yr old wooden mast Mirror) competing at the front in the light conditions with a 3rd overall. It was an excellent weekend that will hopefully stimulate the Sutton Bingham mirror fleet and encourage more visitors next year.

Results:

1st 71039 Natalie Roach / Grace Roach Devon Schools Sailing Association
2nd 70176 James Brant / Daniel Peak Penzance SC
3rd 20489 Robert Bellfield / Imogen Bellfield Sutton Bingham SC
4th 70209 Will Searle / James Wilkinson Penzance SC
5th 67993 Joe Palfrey / Alex Richardson Loose SC
6th 52303 Fred Cleary / Ben Clarke Sutton Bingham SC

South Zone Sailors mix it with Olympic Medalists.
For the Mirror sailors competing at Weymouth for the RYA South Zone Championships it was the chance to rub shoulders with some of GBRs Gold Medal winners, including Ben Ainslie, Ian Percy and Sarah Ayton who presented the prizes. The Mirrors enjoyed some great conditions with light winds on the first day and a good 15+ knots breeze on day two. Competition was very close throughout the fleet and to high standard, in the end the National Squad slugged it out at the front, with Hugo Sloper and Aiden McGarthy, winning from Emma Spruce and Lucy Ford, with Tom Lovesey and Ben Cisneros in third. All three boats winning at least one race.

RYA Junior National Squad 07/08, announced. After much deliberation, the RYA Junior National Squad has been selected. Congratulations to those who have been selected. This year the selectors were faced with many talented sailors, what was particularly impressive was the high standard emerging from the Zone Squads. These youngsters not making the squad this year are almost certainly likely to make an impact next year. We look forward to seeing all the National Squad out competing at the forthcoming Inlands in two weeks time at Blithfield.

Inge-Lisa Hansen and Jack Moor win at Sheffield. Following the recent floods in Sheffield, Damflask Resevoir was full and overflowing. So nine Mirror sailors were greeted by a good expanse of water, some sunshine, and wind gusting up to 30 miles per hour. The weather forecast as usual was entirely different forecasting sunshine and light winds up to 15 miles per hour.

Inge-Lisa Hansen and Jack Moor from North Lincolnshire Sailing Club took the lead in all three races. However on the second race, it was extremely close with Angus Carlisle and Peter Sedgewick from Rippon following a boats length behind. Possibly if Angus had made one tack less, he might have won that race. An exciting day enjoyed by everyone.

Mount' Bay Open Day- Saturday 9th June.. We were blessed with light sea breezes and brilliant sunshine throughout the day which enabled those waiting patiently on the beach for their iniation into Mirror sailing to relax and sunbathe. Having advertised this eventon the local radio and in the press we also contacted local primary schools to ensure they were aware it was taking place. The end result was that between 11am and 3pm over 40 people young and "not so young" tried sailing a Mirror dinghy for the first time. Many stayed on the beach all day and went out several times. There has already been a follow- up from some of those who took part enquiring about club membership and opportunities available to continue sailing and we shall look to support and encourage these potential new sailors.

I should like to record my thanks to the Mirror sailors who supported this event so enthusiastically.and worked tirelessly to make the day such a success.we had ten boats taking "clients".These included members of National and SW Zone squads , club sailors and a visiting boat. Within this report I have to acknowknedge the efforts of Tony Clee who at eighty- one kept pace with his young club colleagues at all times. My thanks also to those who crewed safety boats and supervised the "happenings" both on the beach and on the water.

I anticipate that as a result of the success of the day this will now become an annual event in the Mount's Bay Sailing Club calender.

Mirror Armada status for Ripon SC. In recognition of its excellent Mirror activities and commitment to the class, Ripon has been awarded Armada Status. This will see coaching and development support from the RYA and MCA to help the club further its Mirror fleet activities and become a 'Centre of Excellence' for Mirror activity in the area. The club will shortly be taking delivery of a GRP Mirror as part of its Armada status with new rig and centre main, this will be available for newcomers to sample the delights of a modern Mirror. Ripon SC have organised six Armada training days, these are open to both members and local visitors, don't worry if you don't have a Mirror, it may be possible to borrow a boat or sail with someone else.

Ross Kearney wins at the Hill Head. The second round of the Southern Traveller saw a plethora of champions competing, with World, European and National Champions out in force. In the end the 2005 World Champion made the most of the challenging conditions, sailing with scratch crew Maeve Hogg to win all three races. Jeremy Sibthorpe sailing with daughter Annie took second place, making good use of their newly fitted centre main. Most of the South Zone Squad were competing showing great skill in the big winds (gusting 25 knots +) and building seas, consistently near the front of the fleet, Will Reid and Oliver Negus took third place.

North East Traveller Series – Pennine SC 6 May 2007. Winds of 25 knots gusting to more than 30 knots forced the cancellation of club sailing for the day at the picturesque setting of Pennine SC high on the moors between Barnsley and Manchester. Undeterred, a small Mirror fleet ventured out in testing conditions. Sailing was dominated by former national squad pairing Lilly Carlisle and Becky Wallbank (Ripon SC), who overcame a seriously damaged rudder and sailed superbly throughout to win the event. Second place went to Chris Harding of nearby Huddersfield SC, an outstanding effort sailing single handed in such unpredictable winds. Third place went to Inge-Lise Hansen (North Lincs SC) and Oliver Townsend (Ripon SC) who could hardly have chosen more challenging conditions when sailing together for the first time.

Results:

1. Lilly Carlisle and Becky Wallbank (Ripon SC)
2. Chris Harding (Huddersfield SC)
3. Inge-Lise Hansen (North Lincs SC) and Oliver Townsend (Ripon SC)
4. David and Christopher Speddings (Pennine SC)
5. Angus Carlisle (Ripon SC)
6. (EQUAL) Sarah and George Richards (Pennine SC)
Gerry Dawson and Oliver Blackburn (Pennine SC)

SW Traveller at Plymouth. The first of this years SW Travellers series got under way at the Mayflower SC, Plymouth on Saturday 28th April. In a good Force 5 two races were run before the wind got up further curtailing any further racing. Natalie and Grace Roach sailing Pizzazz won both races to finish 1st overall, followed by James Brant and Chris Parkes in Double Trouble. (Results to follow)

The event was preceded by an open morning at Mayflower SC designed to give the cadets in the club the chance to try out a Mirror. Nine youngsters turned out for the event and took it turns to sail a variety of local Mirrors from Plymouth and Penzance, and the latest MCA boat. Members of the RYA squad system turned out to crew / helm the boats as required together with adults Martin Egan and Peter Scott. Peter, who has bought Juliet Longs first Mirror called Rocket, is to be commended for taking his two young children (age 3 and 5) out and returning with them eager for more, in what were tricky blustery conditions in the morning.

A sign of the enthusiasm of the cadets from Mayflower SC was that all of them, when asked, wanted to take part in the afternoons SW Traveller races. A great day for those who took part, and many thanks to Neil Roach, Natalie Roach, James Brant, Chris Parkes, Will Searle and Martin and Peter for giving their time to the morning event from the MCA side, and to the parents and children from Mayflower SC who manned the rib / committee boats and looked after us all during the day.

Phillip Ben wins at North Lincs. Results of the open meeting 15th April first of the NE travellers
1st Phillip Ben - Ripon
2nd Inge-lisa Hansen & Eloise Hansen - N Lincs
3rd David Moore and Jack Moore - Blithfild
4th Bob Towler - Beaver
Light winds and brilliant sunshine. Racing was postponed after the first race giving an extended lunch break untill the wind filled in again rescuing what had looked like possibly being a disasterous first meeting.
Phillip put in three staight wins with the Moore boys scoring a second and two thirds and the Hansen girls a third and two seconds.Over enthusiasm on the start line in the second race saw the three youth boats over the line and having to go back so giving Bob a chance to take the lead for quite a while.

Tom lovesey and Ben Cisneros win at Reading sc. In light and tricky conditions the youngsters (Tom 12 and Ben 9) took the European Championship winning boat to three straight wins in the first round of the Southern Traveller. Ceilidh Higgs and Alex from Whitstable finished second, with James Lovesey and Mairi Higgs third. The Open Meeting was preceded by a coaching day run by European Champion, Hector Cisneros sharing some of his secrets of success. Tellingly all those who attended the training day appeared in prizes.

John and Jamie Clementson win Selden Nationwide Championships 1. After a great first day of racing and three close races, day two was very frustrating with light to at times non existent wind. This led to only four races being run in total, nevertheless racing was very close, with four different race winners. In the end defending Nationwide Champions, John and Jamie Clementson took the event from National and European Champions, Hector Cisneros and Ben Cisneros, with Natalie and Grace Roach third.

Centremain. The rules changes to allow an optional centremain have now been passed by ISAF, just waiting for agreement on start date, but we hope this to be in time for the new season. For many of our younger sailors who have learned to sail in boats such as Optimists, we are sure the option of a centremain will be very popular. Also approved is an option for a GNAV, for adults wanting to crew for their children this will be a great boon. Suppliers such as Super Spars are working on upgrade kits, with examples on display at the Dinghy Show.

Anna and Holly take three bullets on Day 2. The girls were on fire on day 2 winning all three races in the light to moderate winds. Many found the conditions very taxing with big shifts, wind holes and a short chop to hinder progress. Not surprisingly Anna and Holly now head the leader board, with John and Jamie Clementson moving up to second after a good day. Nick Davis and John Collova of AUS, third. At the halfway stage of the Worlds there are six GBR boats in the top ten.

With results of 10,6,2 the Longs lead from Nick Davis and John Collova of AUS, with Anna Mackenzie and Holly Scott third. With the full on conditions it looks like consistency will be the key to who wins at the end of the week.

Lilly Carlisle and Becky Wallbank win at Beaver . Six visitors joined the 10 (mainly single handed) home boats for the third NE Travellers meeting. The sailors were welcomed by brilliant sunshine and strengthening warm winds and the friendly club atmosphere. David and Jack brought their new toy the one piece mast to play with spending much of the day tuning and tweaking the settings and braving personal injury (hope the finger is OK now Jack). This eventually paid off with devastating effects on the well deserved winners of the first two races, Lilly and Becky who had put in a convincing performance but were left standing by the speed and power of the Moore boys new rig (if we didn’t know better we might have suspected mechanical assistance!!).The boys triumph in the last race spoiling the National squad girls clean sweep but still allowed them to take overall first place. Inge-lisa and Hannah took second place overall with single handers Angus and Ray Baskerville coming third and fourth.

History of the Mirror Dinghy Exhibition. With over 70,000 boats, the Mirror is the World's most popular double handed dinghy, and probably responsible for introducing more people to the joys of sailing than any other class. Now this famous and well loved red sailed boat features in it own exhibition, charting the impact of Mirrors on lifestyle in the 60s.

Neal McDonald, former Mirror sailor on his way to Port Elizabeth. Neal who started his sailing career in Mirrors at Warsash, is skippering his Volvo 70 Round the World Yacht towards Port Elizabeth, the home of the 2007 Mirror Worlds. Unfortunately Ericsson have experienced keel problems shortly after the start of Leg 2 of the Volvo Ocean Race. As a further link to the Mirror class, Neal also crewed Roger Yeoman at the 88 Olympics. We wish Neal and the team the best of luck, hopefully they won't still be in PE when Team GBR descend next January, or we may have to find a Mirror for him to sail.

Barry's clean sweep broken. After taking straight bullets from the first four races in the National Squad Series, Emma's and Martina's winning run was broken last weekend at Rutland. With Ed Fitz and James Wallace taking two wins, and Jilli Darling and Emma Spruce the other. The Barrys still head the overall table, but Ed and James have dramatically cut their lead. Outside of the podium, the girls made gains, with Rebecca Kalderon and Olivia Peacock, Inge-Lisa Hansen and Hannah Mitchell, Jilli and Emma all jumping up the leader board, speed up lads !!!

New Sew on Badges. The merchandising team have been busy looking at new items to add to the Mirror shop and are now offering sew on badges. As per the other clothing items these feature an embroidered Mirror which can be customised with the colour of your hull and spinnaker, plus boat name and sail number. These badges are great for personalising your sailing bags and other items. If you are quick with your order, you should be able to get these for Christmas. Please note for those interested in caps we can only supply a minimum of four to the same design, smaller quantities can still be ordered but not customised.

Class Judge Review. We have now completed the first year with a dedicated Class Judge, Martin Smethers. Having our own dedicated judge has given us consistency and allowed us to benefit from Martin's vast experience. Martin has been available to discuss rules matters after the racing and has produced some great reviews of the main issues he has observed on the water. This is a great opportunity for all of us to learn and improve our rules knowledge.

Martin has produced a review of the year, available from the judging page :

Hector, race winner at Endeavour Trophy. As our National Champion, Hector Cisneros represented the Mirror class at the Endeavour Trophy, only National Champions can enter, so this is the Championship of Champions. Here is Hector's report :

"Knowing that the chosen boat for the event was to be the new Topper Xenon (similar to an RS400) Ben reluctantly surrendered his position at the front of the boat to someone a few years older, Graham Williamson!, fellow Mirror parent helm and former Merlin Champion.

In a moderate breeze we started the 8 race series brightly with a 4th. A few disasters followed during the remaining 4 races on Saturday, however, things went our way on Sunday morning when in a light breeze we won race 6.Though we made a mess of race 7, a 6th place in the last race sneaked us into the prizes at 6th overall.

Not having sailed together before and with little asymmetric experience between us Graham and I were pleased to finish ahead of 20 other national champions and hope we represented the Mirror class well."

Well done Hector and Graham, great result and certainly demonstrates the Mirror fleet is one of the most competitive.

Fortunately come the afternoon the cloud had lifted allowing a light breeze to build to give three races and a late finish at 18.00. After five races John and Jamie Clementson of GBR lead the Worlds winning two races on the third day. There are six GBR boats in the top ten.

A frustatrating day at the office. Day Two of the 2005 Mirror World Championships was a frustrating affair for both the competitors and race team. With a large group of boats pushing the line near the committee boat, the inevitable general recall was signalled at the first start. The next attempted start saw the breeze fade at the gun and 75% of the fleet taking over 15 minutes to clear the line, giving the race officer no option but to abandon this start. The third start got away in a good breeze with some hiking for the lighter crews, this lasted for the first part of the course but started to die on the second windward leg. Frustratingly for Team GBR with several boats at the front, particularly Peter Gray and Rachel Williamson who were leading this race, practically touching the finishing line when the two hour time limit passed. The forecast for Tuesday is for a good breeze, with the plan for three races.

Emma Houlihan and Emily MacKenzie win the first race of the Worlds. In a moderate breeze from the cold north and rain, Em and Em took race 1 from Simon McGrotty and Melissa Daly of IRL. Race 2 was won by Ross Kearney and Adam McCullough (IRL)with Simon and Melissa second again. Overall John and Jamie Clementson are sailing consistently to be second, with seven GBR boats in the top ten. With a shifty wind, a short chop and holes, the emphasis is on keeping the boat moving in clear air. Excellent fleet of 102 Mirrors.

No racing on last day of pre-worlds. With no wind and the threat of thunderstorms the race officer abandoned the final two races of the pre-worlds and Swedish International championships, leaving the first four races all to count. This put four GBR boats in the top four, with Robert Struckett and Inge-lisa Hansen taking the championships from John and Jamie Clementson, with Eloise and Kayleigh Hansen third. In total there were seven GBR boats in the top ten.

Peter Gray and Rachel Williamson make it a hat trick at the Inlands. The Youth Squad pair took their third Championship of 2005 at Staunton Harold but with the event going right down to the wire, being settled on the last leg of the last lap, even then the first two boats had to be split on countback. Josh Rumbol and Tom Lovesey in their first outing pushed the winners all the way to provide the spectators with some nail biting racing. National Champions, Hector and Ben Cisneros were third.

Ref Parking at the Nationals:. Everyone pls note that (car) parking at the Nationals will be at the nearby pay and display. The reason for this is that space is at a premium as PYC have lost the use of an overflow carpark which was part of the ferry terminal. Parking is within 100yds so no real issue there. When you arrive at the club you will be directed around a small (coned) roundabout (inside the club entrance) and asked to unhitch your trailer (plenty of help available), then straight away continue back out to the car park. If we keep it moving there will be little or no congestion. Thanks

Ania Booth and Emily Hampton-Matthews top Mirror at Junior Bloody Mary. Congratulations to the National Squad girls for coming 6th overall and 1st Mirror (despite being 15 mins late for their start - where were you girls??!!). It was blowing a gale - gusts up to nearly 30 knots were recorded and conditions were very difficult with numerous capsizes and retirements due to fatigue and gear failure.

The Mirrors with 13 boats entered made up the largest double handed fleet by some way. Youth Squad member Shaun Mason and Jake Bonsor led the Mirror fleet for most of the race, only to suffer gear failure and "a few" capsizes minutes before the end causing their late retirement.

Well done to Sam Nicholls and Adam Meekings(also 15 mins late!) who came 2nd Mirror and pushed the girls hard for most of the race.

Euros Day 4. Day 4 of 2004 Mirror Europeans started in bright sunshine and some breeze, giving ideal conditions for the 122 boats and lifting spirits following the abandonment of the previous day.

For Race 5, the Race Officer set a windward/leeward course in a shifty Force 3 wind. With large shifts and many holes in the wind, the competitors experienced many place changes. Louise Kerr and Joanne O'Hara (IRL) won from Andrew Woodward and James Bendon (IRL), with Dave and Joric Gebhard (GBR) third in Trident-UK

Race 6 a windward/leeward course was again set in similar conditions. National Squad sailors Juliet and Richard Long (GBR) won from Andrew Woodward and James Bendon (IRL), with Dave and Joric Gebhard (GBR) third again.

For Race 7, the breeze built to good Force 4 and reasonable steady, albeit with some holes to catch people out. Andrew Woodward and James Bendon (IRL) won, from father and son team Craig and Mitchell Bond, with fellow Team GBR members Robert Struckett and Tom Hodkinson third.

After six races (race three being thrown out), Andrew Woodward and James Bendon (IRL) lead the championship (10 points) from the Gebhards (18 points) with local sailors Brian Cox and Rory Rafferty third (23 points).

Gebhard leads Euros. For Day Two of the 2004 Mirror European Championships the 122 boats experienced a wet day with light shifty winds. For the resail of RACE TWO, Race Officer, Tony O'Gorman set a windward/leeward course. In the shifty winds this caught many boats out, resulting in bunching round the marks. Andrew Woodward and James Bendon (IRL) won the race, from GBR National Squad Members Robert Struckett and Tom Hodkinson, with father and son team Guy and Joe Wilkins (GBR) third.

For RACE THREE, again a windward/leeward course was set which was shortened after two laps as the Race Officer was keen to sail three races on Day 2, making up for loosing the second race on Day 1 as a result of the massive thunderstorm. The last beat saw a massive wind shift, allowing some boats to reach to the finish. Defending Champion Dave and Joric Gebhard (GBR) in Trident-UK won, from Patrick Houlihan and Inge-Lisa Hansen (GBR), with Juliet and Richard Long (GBR) third.

In RACE FOUR, the Race Officer reverted to the standard Olympic Course, and with an increasing wind the competitors enjoyed the best racing of the day, it was a pity some went ashore early frustrated with the light winds of the previous races. Dave and Joric Gebhard (GBR) in Trident-UK won again, from race 1 winners, Brian Cox and Rory Rafferty (IRL), with Louise Kerr and Joanne O'Hara (IRL) third.

After four races, Dave and Joric Gebhard (GBR) in Trident-UK head the championship from Andrew Woodward and James Bendon (IRL), with Eloise Hansen and Kayleigh Hansen (GBR) third and also top girls. Full results

Nearly a double for Double Trouble. The FIRST RACE of the 2004 Mirror Europeans started with the inevitable general recall, not surprising with 123 boats on a long start line. Racing at Lough Derg, Ireland the Mirror class are enjoying some great sailing with competitors from as far a field as New Zealand.

After the introduction of the black flag, the fleet got away and enjoyed some very close racing over a long course. At the front were the practice race winners, the Hansen Sisters (GBR) in Double Trouble who led most of the race only to be piped at the finish by mistaking the outer end and letting the local Irish boat Seriously Easy Going with Brian Cox and Rory Rafferty taking honours for the day. Father and son team, Guy and Joe Wilkins (GBR) were third. Dave and Joric Gebhard (GBR) fourth.

RACE TWO started in ever darkening skies, quickly followed by an amazing electrical storm centred over the lake. Sensibly the race was cancelled and the fleet sent ashore. Full results

Your Class needs your help. The Mirror Class Association (MCA) is run by its members, on a predominantly voluntary basis. This year's AGM (29th Aug 2004) will see many of the committee members standing down as they are no longer actively involved with class, we therefore require your help to ensure the smooth running of the class, both at committee level or for specific tasks that need to be undertaken.

Dan and James Ellis from Plymouth are National Champions. Congratulations to Dan and James who have won the 40th Anniversary Mirror Nationals sponsored by Henri Lloyd at South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club, Abersoch. Max Capener & Katy Jones were 2nd with Craig & Mitchell Bond 3rd. The end of the week finished in sunshine and a force 3, after a week of strong winds and rain, and at just 14 and 12, Dan and James are (we think) the youngest National Champions ever - a tribute to the RYA Junior Sailing Program of which they are part of. At the prizegiving, Dan thanked SCYC and in particular Mike Crompton for putting on a great event, the sponsors, Barry McGill the OOD, Keiron who was in charge of safety, James his brother and crew, his parents Nigel and Karen, his coach Peter Aitken and the many other people who have helped him through this week and before. Now his attention turns to the 420 where along with many other ex-Mirror sailors, he will be looking for a place in the RYA National Youth Squad. James will start to helm his own boat. We wish them the very best for the future and congratulate them once more for being very worthy National Champions. Report and results under "Events/Class Championships"
