Scottish Champion of Champions 2010

I was very excited when my dad and I were asked to represent the Mirror class at the Scottish Champion of Champion’s event at Dalgety Bay, 16/17 October. The best two boats in each class in Scotland are invited to take part in this event each year, so it was very special.

There were 29 boats at the event, which were divided into two fleets – fast handicap (PY <1100) and slow handicap, but the results were combined. Of course, we were in the slow fleet with Solos, RS Fevas, Toppers, Laser Radial and Optimists.

On Saturday it was fine and sunny but there was very little wind, and the direction kept changing so it was hard for the race officer to set the courses. Eventually we all set out into the Firth of Forth about one and a half hours later than planned. The starts were difficult because of the light winds and the mixture of boat speeds. Also, the tide was strong and in the same direction as the wind, so getting to the windward mark was quite a struggle for the slower handicap boats like us, and there was a lot of yelling at the windward mark when the fast fleet caught us up. We kept up with the Toppers in each race and thought we had done OK but our best result on Saturday was 23rd.

Sunday was different, with a force 3 wind to begin with, that rose to force 5 by the last race. We had great fun in the stronger winds with exciting spinnaker runs and reaches, and some bumpy upwind beats in the waves. The courses were really good, with lots of spinnaker gybes which were exciting in the stronger winds. Quite a few boats capsized or retired with damage, but we were OK and our best result was 16th in the final race.

The Champion of Champions event was the most exciting regatta I have taken part in. I think we learnt a lot about racing during the two days and we had great fun even though we were well down the results. Hopefully more Mirror dinghy sailors will be interested in taking part in some regattas next year and we can organise some events just for Mirror dinghies.
