26 Boats turned out for the 2011 Insurance 4 Dinghies RYA Scotland Champion of Champions Regatta at Largs, 22-23 October. The Mirror class was represented by one boat (766, Mike and Caroline Heath, Helensburgh SC). The disparate fleet ranging from a Hurricane catamaran to an Optimist were divided into a fast and slow handicap group sailing the same course but with separate starts, and the results, based on PY corrected average lap time, combined to give an overall ranking.
The weather forecast for Saturday was accurate, with a weather front crossing the west of Scotland and winds expected to be >25kn. The race officer deliberated until 11am, hoping for the winds to subside, but with 25-28kn gusting 40kn and rising had no choice but to abandon the day.
Sunday was calmer and the fleet started launching at 09:30 hoping to squeeze 4 races out of the day. In the event, only 3 races were completed in conditions varying from 5 to 18 Kts with occasional rain. A huge course was laid in Largs Channel (~3.5km per lap on a straight-line course between the marks). This suited the fast handicap boats but not the slow, and the highest PY handicap boats were shown Flag S after only a single lap in every race whilst the lowest PY boats completed 3 or 4 laps. This meant a lot of dodging around in the wind and rain getting cold until the rest of the fleet had completed each race. In the end, Mike and Caroline were 26th overall, with individual race results of 25, 24 and 25, which was disappointing. Nevertheless it was good to take part and race with the best in Scotland.

There were some action photos from the event in a Fotoboat album (search the Gallery for "RYAS Champion of Champions Largs SC Oct 2011"), but it seems this is no longer online.
