TOPIC: Centre main and gnav

Centre main and gnav 16 Apr 2008 20:33 #15971

Hi Cush

There was a proposal at last years AGM that would simplify the rules and allow you to rig pretty much how you wish. The rules are in the process of international ratification, so my recommendation is wait for a short while until they are passed.

Trevor,

Thanks for clarifying – I was mistakenly under the impression that the centre main was approved, but only because I spotted that Trident are selling conversion kits.

The center main is legal, but the rules are being loosened to simplify the mainsheet system and give you less 'string' in the boat, should you wish. Also the new system (split tail) will allow the main to be sheeted to the center line without excessive leach tension in light airs.

The kicker will be allowed to be 8:1 as well.

These need to be approved signed off by the international committee first so until that time unless you really want to change I'd wait and see how it shakes out.

Centre Main

Not sure I feel the need just yet as Port and Starboard are only just starting to learn properly and doing a lot of boat hopping. But if /when I do decide to fit one, can I just go straight up and down from the thwart to the boom with a 2:1 without taking the sheet out to the end of the boom?

How does that work then? I would love to get rid of the kicker but I have yet to see a gnav on a Mirror in the flesh, or a set of plans or even a set of clear photos.
