Rowing with the sail rig? was created by mirror11726
Hi,

I took the kids out the other day for a short cruising adventure and we sailed to Granite Island at Victor Harbour (South Australia) for some icecream (trying to use bribery to get the boys interested in sailing).

I decided to row the last few metres to the wharf to prevent any uncontrolled contact. This was the first time I had rowed with the mast and boom fitted. I lowered the jib and gaff but it was incredibly difficult to row with the boom and gaff over my shoulder, visibility was very limited. Am I missing something simple, was I supposed to unlace the main and remove the gaff to stow forward?

Thanks in advance for any tips,

Pete.

I recently took my boat to the Norfolk broads and there were stretches with no wind - I found it much easier to just row with the sail up, if you can keep your head out of the way of the boom. It's impossible with it down unless you undo the whole thing (lacing, gaff and boom) which wasn't practical for me as I was swapping between sailing and rowing every few minutes.

I lower the gaff and then tie the gaff and boom together with the sail bundled in between. I keep tape ties in the front lockers for the purpose. You can then use the gaff halyard to raise the whole lot up to about a 45 degree angle which keeps it nicely out of the way for rowing and looks rather piratical at the same time. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Excellent, I like that idea, I'll give it a crack.

I went back to Victor Harbor again and a large pod of dolphins joined in. I've uploaded a video of the encounter at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FiZVbNkPoc .

Thanks again.

Pete.
