Dorchester SC Open 18th April 2004
Dorchester SC kicked off the 2004 Mirror Southern Traveller Series with their Open Meeting on Sunday 18th April. Following a highly successful Open Coaching day on Saturday, the ten boats were greeted with a damp day and little breeze.
Race one started from the committee boat and a short beat across the lake in front of the club house. Simon and James Lovesey narrowly made it to the windward mark first. With much improved spinnaker handling after the previous day's practice, the Lovesey father and son team, were able to open a big lead on the long off wind leg, which they maintained to the finish. Ron Vass and Ed Nicholls also managed to pull away from the pack to finish second, with Sam Nicholls and Georgina Kirkwood working their way up to third.
The second race, held after lunch, saw the Race Officer take sanctuary in the Starting Box, a wise choice as there was even more rain, less wind and very shifty. Excellent spinnaker work by Alice and Jillian Darling, saw the two sisters pull out an early lead, but by the gybe mark had been caught by the Loveseys . With clear wind, and regular bailing of the never ending rain, the Loveseys developed another big lead to take race 2, with Ron Vass and Ed Nicholls working their way through to second and locals Tom and John Brett and third.
With two wins, the Loveseys sat out the last race. Fast improving junior team, James Thomas and Evan Goodrum, took the winning gun in their 36 year old boat. This win gave them third place overall and first Junior, again Ron Vass and Ed Nicholls were second, to finish second overall.
The Mirror Southern Traveller Series consist of twelve events on inland and coastal waters, many are supported by training days.
