Report by ELLIE HIDE
After the carnage that was West Lancs, we started the weekend at Beaver by finding out that the girls changing rooms were being redone and so we had to get changed in the ROD box at the top of a steep ladder which was a new experience! And also with a quick reminder of rules, to prevent a repeat of the previous weekend, which had ended up costing a few parents due to repairs. Oops. We were gratefully joined by team Grayson who it had to be said were ever so good! Saturday morning was light about 6mph but we got straight on with our weekends objective, upwind strategy, by doing various exercises such as buddy beats, twin windward marks and aiming for 9.1 to help us think about favoured sides of the beat , boat on boat tactics and quickest route to the windward mark taking into account the shifts. We ended the day with taking and gibing on the whistle and the key word ‘smooth’ deeply imbedded into our minds.
We arrived at Draycote in pouring rain. It was cold and there was not much wind, but it was good to see everyone and get back into sailing again.
Rosie and Midge Watkins, Kim May Papailiou and Amie Sparks, Millie and Nick Pugh and Helena Pugh and Libby Courage all travelled from Poole Yacht Club. Tom Cosier and Niamh arrived from Restronget in Cornwall. Malie and Drystan Harnett from Whitstable and Reg and Emma Grayson from Beaver SC and ourselves Matt and Ben Lulham-Robinson from Yorkshire.

1. When did you get involved with Mirrors and why did you choose the
Mirror as a boat to sail?
Six years ago we started our sailing adventure and I purchased a Mirror
dinghy fully rigged, with road trailer and trolley for £250:00!!!!!!!!!!!!! I
saw the Mirror as a true family boat whereby any combination of the
family members could go for a sail, even me and the wife!
Sunday 6th February saw the start of the second of five training sessions arranged for South West Mirror sailors from Penzance SC , Mounts Bay SC and Looe SC.
The weather God’s failed to smile on the day, with a Force 5 blowing across Roadford Lake in Devon where the training event was held. Coach James Rusden mustered the crews for a 09.30 briefing, setting out tasks to do with boat handling around pre-laid marks, in what it was hoped would be a sheltered area of the Lake.
There was a tingle of excitement as the national squad met again after two months of not seeing each other when our weekend in January was cancelled because of the snow! A lot had happened in those two months; Christmas, New Year and not to mention my Birthday but whilst we were in minus eight degrees Matthew and Benjamin Lullham Robinson and Emma and Rachel Grayson had been in 25degrees C (which Matt said wasn’t too hot!) at the mirror world Championships so there was a lot to catch up on and congratulate them on! It was really interesting finding out about the Australia and the different conditions (27 knots most days!)
