The 29 and 30th of November saw the first weekend of the newly formed Mirror Class South West Squad sponsored by Gul at the beautiful Mounts Bay Sailing Club in Cornwall.

The plan for Saturday morning was boat handling; however the forecast of a light South Easterly failed to materialise till mid-morning.  When the wind finally filled in, the sailors were already on the water with the first focus on smooth tacking and roll tacking.  Unfortunately the wind lasted less than an hour and a half and the decision was taken for an early lunch.  The parents provided lovely, and much needed soup, tea, and cakes in the clubhouse.

After lunch the wind again didn't fill in so the sailors did a session on control lines, and sail setting for varying conditions.  With still no wind in the bay, and an unfavourable forecast, the decision was taken in mid-afternoon to abandon for the day and make an early start the following morning..

Sunday dawned bright and clear with an 8 knot offshore wind and a flat sea perfect for training.  The sailors launched early and spent 3 hours on the water with again the focus tacking and spinnaker gybing.  Stan and Lisa Pritchard showed some slick boat handling skills proving that Lisa’s time in the National Squad had been well spent.  The session finished off with some very quick start sequences.

Following another fantastic lunch, the afternoon sailing started with the first session on Marazion beach looking at transits, to the amusement of the many walkers and dogs exercising there.  We then launched and concentrated on the first of many sessions on starting skills, and the day ended with 3 quick races.  The first race was convincingly won by Amy and Chloe George; and Lilly Medlicott and Demelza Hewitt showed that an older boat is just as quick as the new ones with a great start and clear air in the second race.

The boats came ashore as the sun set over Mousehole.  Many thanks must go to Mounts Bay Sailing Club for hosting us, and to the parents who launched and recovered the ribs each day, and provided us with fantastic food at lunchtime.  And thanks to our sponsors Gul.

There are 3 further scheduled training weekends with the next being on the 24th and 25th of January, and if any other Mirror sailors would like to join us, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
