Twelve Mirrors took part in the event. No less than 9 were GB team members. Five races, 4 to count. The constant NE wind force 2 to 3 with a spring tide made the event an exercise in tide and current. The fleet was divided into those who used the tide to advantage and those who did not. It was chocolates for the over thirties. Guy Wilkins and Alan Bennett were never to be challenged after race I and 2 it was clear that the championship was going to go to one of these experienced sailors.
The younger sailors were often left off the pace by the leebow tactics and extra speed that could be extracted from the sea. The wind velocity was not a factor it was the same for all, but the tidal current was! Indeed it all came to the last race. Having had 4 races out in the North sea the final decider was inside the Tyne piers. The first four positions being at stake . It was that Guy again that just did enough to keep Alan Bennett and Holly Scott in second place, and Guy Wilkins with son Ben once again showed the consistency that fills the family trophy cabinet. Tim Gray came good at the end with his new plastic boat to nick third place from Gerry McGill on discard, but not before Luke McGill had eaten the chocolates having been told he was third (sorry Tim). The event was a sucess with South Shields Sailing Club providing excellent allround service as well as a fleet of 50 other boats to share the club open event.
Results five races, 4 to count.
